The Formentera Department of Environment reports that work began today to haul away a sailboat stranded on Platja de Llevant since August. The department has petitioned the harbour master’s office, coastal authority and nature reserve to oversee removal of the 14-metre vessel in a way that will minimise damage to nearby sand dunes.
Ruling out relaunching the ship after having confirmed its poor state and unseaworthiness, crews opted to drag it inland this morning and immobilise it to avert environmental damage amid this weekend’s forecasted strong winds. They will determine how to proceed once the storm passes.
The Consell prioritised a swift response and will act as an intermediary in the boat’s removal. Costs associated with the operation are to be paid by the ship’s owner.
